Today marks the last day of my internship! YAY to no waking up early in the morning or being a zombie as I make my way to office, or spending insane money on lunches that could have been cheaper or going home late and having little time to myself or falling asleep the moment I reach home or anything actually! Hahaha. But I do have to admit that I really learnt a lot when I’m working in Singapore Post or more commonly known as SingPost.
It was quite tough throughout the internship as would any job be when you want to do your best. Picking up everyday skills in the office, learning how to work with different people, maintaining relations, making friends (introvert here!). My boss, Brynner, told us that we made a great contribution to SingPost, but in my opinion it is okay, not exactly that great, significant maybe. After all we did help start out the plans for the future post offices.
I didn’t really get to do what I was recruited for nor what I wanted to do. But it was okay (in a way expected) and that I actually got to do many other stuff and explore different types of work.
I was hired to be an experience designer and marketing intern. I did minimal marketing stuff, and did plenty strategy stuff in relative.
Going on outpost and observing how post offices work, and learning how Singpost staff work so hard at the back end for us. My heart really go out for most of the aunties and uncles working, they really put in a lot of effort and are really kind. Please be patient with them after all they are still human as well, at times there are situations that as a customer you will not know.
We even managed to see the process of handling postal items. The whole flow of what happens when you mail is received by Singpost. It was weird though, as we only managed to go on this educational tour second last day of our internship. But now I see the process I understand why the mails are always ‘late’. Especially for parcel and even worst for registered mail. FYI, don’t mail fragile items without protecting them well. Also Postal Code is very very very important, like uber important!
If Singpost were to reopen/restart the educational tour visits for the operations to public again, I strongly suggest to go for it. As it will provide a good insight of the postal service. and do you know that they work from 2 pm - 6 am just to get our mails mailed (of course in shifts). It was a real amazing experience.
In many ways I learn a lot of things and got a glimpse of the work life. It isn’t easy. And makes me want to extend my uni days indefinitely. I mean, studies have their problems and blahs as well, so does the working world. It is just at the moment I would prefer studying then to work.
I met a lot of great people at Singpost and they are really friendly. Many moments and memories were made, though not all good for sure. But generally, I leave Singpost rather happy.
